My boss often passes on new music suggestions to me. Today's recommendation, a Brooklyn based indie-pop trio called Hospitality.

The bands first full-length, self-titled album came out recently and it's a must listen.

I listened to this a few times at work and it's very fun (think hand claps & horns). The lyrics tell the story of the life of a typical twentysomething, which is something I can completely relate to. The band reminds me of a mix between Belle & Sebastian and Vampire Weekend.

Standout tracks: Eighth Avenue, Friends of Friends, The Right Profession, Liberal Arts and All Day Today

DIY: Neon Earrings

Hey everyone! I'm in the process of moving, so I've been packing, unpacking, cleaning, organizing and donating so many things from my closet. I also had some craft projects planned for this weekend, but only half finished most of them. One is a jewelry frame/holder which involves tools such as a hammer. These types of things I think I can do, but then realize I'm not so good at building things. I should probably stick to jewelry, but more on that later!

Anyway, after I finished my to-do list I worked on this simple DIY which was easy and on trend. Have you been to GAP recently? Everything is either color-block or neon. These trends, especially neon colors, I think are going to be short-lived, so rather than buying, DIY!

As I was unpacking and organizing my jewelry I came across these silver earrings from H&M. Cute, yet boring. They must have been sitting at the bottom of my jewelry box for a couple of years.

Remember the painted chain necklace DIY from last month? Same idea. I found neon orange nail polish in my collection that I've never worn and decided that would be the perfect color.

Just use painters tape across the middle of each earring and use the nail polish to paint the bottom half.

Easy, cheap and trendy! Perfect to make any simple outfit a bit edgier.

One of my favorite jewelry designers and a huge inspiration to me and my shop is Erica Weiner. She creates jewelry from beautiful vintage things. I discovered her at Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago a couple years ago and bought a pair of gold earrings (worn here).

Last night while I was browsing Tumblr, I came across this article about Erica. In it she talks about her first craft show in Philadelphia and how she got started. I am so much more of a fan after reading it because I can relate to her. And yes, my (secret) dream is to be a jewelry designer or at the very least a regular at craft shows.

This necklace is on my birthday wish list and one of the many items I am in love with from her site.

I also came across this necklace which gave me a DIY idea.

Her 14K gold plated button necklace is adorable, but a bit out of my price range. I went on a search for some golf vintage buttons and found these to put onto a thin gold chain.

Gold + mint green? Yes.

It may seem materialistic, but sometimes a new pair of shoes trulylifts my mood. This weekend I needed some retail therapy and went on asearch to find these. I couldn't find them (if you do, please let me know!), but they did inspire a wish list for spring.

Two very talented Anthony's released solo albums yesterday.

Circa Survive is not my favorite band, but I do really like Anthony Green. Beautiful Things is his second solo release, a follow-up to Avalon. This album is incredibly raw and honest. It's about Anthony's struggles through happiness, pain and growing up. One of my favorite bands, Good Old War is the backing band on this album.

Standout Tracks: If I Don't Sing, Do it Right, Get Yours While You Can and Can't Have It All at Once

I love Bayside. I've also seen Anthony Raneri perform solo several times and he's great. This solo EP, New Cathedrals, is surprising and much different than I expected. It's light, joyful and includes snaps and hand claps. I would describe it melodic, acoustic punk rock. Very fun to listen to and also super raw.

Standout tracks: Sandra Partial, Charleston and Please Don't Leave

It is COLD in PA. I guess I block winter out, because I always seem to forget just how horrible it is. This morning I had trouble getting dressed, none of my typical outfits had the right amount of layers. So here is some winter style inspiration from Pinterest.

I love the high bun & bangs look with a chunky scarf. Currently I need a change in hair style, but I'm not sure what to do with it.

Because there was nothing on the radio I put in a mix CD that Chris made me a while ago. It was a mix of his favorite Fiona Apple songs and it was perfect. DIY: Twig Necklace

Hi readers! Today I made another necklace inspired by pictures I've seen on Pinterest. More specifically, this...

I love nature themed jewelry, so I decided to try making a necklace.

You need: Twigs, wire, gold paint (this would be cute in silver, also), chain, jump rings and a paint brush.

First paint the twig with one coat of gold (or silver) then let it dry. I only did one coat because I liked the brown color coming through.

When it's dry, wrap thin wire around each end, securing jump rings to each side.

Once you've finished adding the rings, you've finished your pendant. Add chain and clasps and you're done!

This necklace turned out to look much more expensive than just a twig I found in my front yard. Let me know what you think!

This week has had ups & downs! While I'm succeeding in my career, everything else seems to be complicated. How does that happen? I had a post written about my relationship turned long-distance relationship, but my thoughts on the subject kept changing, so I didn't post it. DIY (+ Giveaway): Ruffle Necklace

Exciting news! I'm slowly teaching myself how to sew. Patience is key! Anyway, thanks to Pinterest, I've found a ton of beginners sewing projects.

Here is how to make a ruffle fabric necklace (keep reading for a bit of a giveaway).

Supplies: Scrap fabric (3 inches wide, 8 or more inches long), wire, chain, pliers, scissors and a sewing machine.

Cut the fabric to abut 3 inches wide and 8 inches long (you can make it longer if you want more ruffles). Fold the fabric over and create a seam 1/4 of an inch down from the folded seam.

Cut a piece of wire about 4 inches long and feed the wire through the sleeve you created. Using the pliers, create hooks on each end. Attach the ends of the chain to each hook and secure.

And there you have it! A ruffled fabric necklace! I made two with scrap fabric I had - one with polka dots and the other with mustard yellow flowers.

These were fun to make, but not really my style. Although, probably very cute with a plain tee! Like one? Let me know which! I'll randomly pick someone (if more than one person wants one) to send it to! Just leave a comment.

On Friday I went to see I Am the Avalanche a a super small venue in New Jersey. Holy hell, it was a good show. Their newest album, Avalanche United, made my top 10 albums of 2011 list, so I was pumped to see them headline a show. They did not disappoint. Brand New Year.

This New Years I opted out of the typical drunken party scene to see Brand New play a show and not just any show. They played three sets - 1. Acoustic, 2. All of 'Your Favorite Weapon' (which was a very influential album to me) and 3. A fan request set.

Chris & I headed to The House of Blues A.C., which if you've ever been, is exactly like what you see on the Jersey Shore which makes for some interesting people watching. I was much more excited about all of this than him (Brand New wasn't really his generation).

The show was sold out so there were so many people! And the crowd was horrible. Seriously, Brand New has some of the worst fans. I think it has to do with the fact that Jesse Lacey is a complete asshole, BUT I still love their music.

The acoustic set was great, as was the fan request set, but what I was most excited about was 'Your Favorite Weapon.' Which was amazing. I knew every single word and raged like I was in high school.

The set ended with the last song on the album, of course, Soco Amaretto Lime, which lined up perfectly with the countdown to midnight. It was so, so good.

It was great to ring in the new year with pop-punk and fellow fans, but that is for sure the last time I will pay to see Brand New live. They will never put on a show that will top this. I have seen 'Your Favorite Weapon' live and can now move on with my adult life.

Hello! What are you doing for New Years Eve? I decided last minute to spring for tickets to see Brand New in Atlantic City. I am very excited because they will be playing Your Favorite Weapon in its entirety. Today I started thinking though...what will I wear?

Fashion on New Years is important. Why? I'm not sure, but people get very stressed out about choosing an outfit. Here are two ideas that avoid excessive sequins.

The first is casual, if you aren't into dresses or are going to a concert like me. A dress at a punk rock show is definitely not a good idea. My thought is a nice, but not too formal top with skinny jeans, comfy (yet fashionable) shoes and simple jewelry. Black & white with a pop of color is a great way to be festive for NYE without being over-the-top.

The outfit on the right is more dressy and perhaps my dream outfit. DO YOU SEE THAT DRESS? It's from Topshop and I would love to own it. Then again, when on earth would I wear it? Probably not often. Anyway, I paired it with black because that seems to fit with the NYE theme. I love the idea of wearing patterned tights with it.

What are your plans for New Years...and more importantly, what do you plan to wear?

DIY: Painted Chain Necklace

I've been coming across quite a few necklaces on Pinterest that are really only painted chains. They are very cute though and I wanted to try making one.

I chose to replicate this necklace from Urban Outfitters which is super overpriced.

The challenge was, what type of paint would adhere to the metal chain. After some research I found that my options were spray paint or nail polish. Because the chain I was using was small, I decided to go the nail polish route. DO NOT use acrylic paint. It will rub off onto your clothes.

Supplies: All you need are nail polish, a long silver chain and a jump ring. If you were to use spray paint, you would also need painters tape.

Create the chain part of the necklace by double wrapping the chain to the length you would like your necklace to be and secure with the jump ring. From there, just get creative! You have to do a couple of coats, let each dry before applying more nail polish.

This was so very easy!

Here is some more inspiration. I plan to find some neon spray paint to try out jewelry like the pieces above.

Favorite Shows of 2011

Ranking these was stressing me out, so here are my favorite shows from this year in no particular order! Except, I can say for sure, the best show I went to this year was The Wonder Years at the Starlight Ballroom!

Here are other great shows I attended...

Jukebox the Ghost at the First Unitarian Church - A very fun show that included drinking wine from a water bottle and dancing like crazy.

Blink 182 with My Chemical Romance and Manchester Orchestra - This wasn't actually that great due to the lack of flying drum solo and obnoxious, drunk teens, but it did fulfill me dream of seeing Blink 182 live!

Bright Eyes with Dawes and M.Ward - This show was at a large outdoor theater. Bright Eyes was great, but Dawes and M.Ward were a bit hard to hear. If you every have a chance to see Bright Eyes live, they do not disappoint.

Vinnie Caruana & Brandon Reilly at the Barbary - A very small venue and some amazing acoustic versions of my favorite Movielife songs. Such an intimate show.

Ellie Goulding at the World Cafe Live - Before going to this show I had never listened to Ellie. She is a very talented singer and I'm glad I had the chance to see her at a small venue.

Jarrod Gorbel and A Great Big Pile of Leaves at the World Cafe Live - I went to see AGBPOL, but ended up loving Jarrod Gorbel and his newest album.

Dr. Dog with The Head & the Heart at the Electric Factory - Such a fun show! And it was on my Birthday! From going to this show I discovered The Head & the Heart which is a great band.

Saves the Day, I Am the Avalanche & Bayside at the Troc - Perhaps my dream show? STD really stood out and their set included some of Daybreak which made me love the album.

Happy Body Slow Brain and A Great Big Pile of Leaves at the Knitting Factory - AGBPOL's were excellent, as was HBSB. What made the show even better was being there with so many great friends.

Margot & the Nuclear So & So's - Not the best Margot show I've been to, but still really good.

Yuck at the First Unitarian Church - One of my favorite venues with one of my favorite bands!

Less than Jake at the Troc - A great show because there was so much energy! Ska shows are fun, and such a throwback.

Motion City Soundtrack at the TLA - 2 Nights in a row & all of their albums played in their entirety. These shows were so, so much fun.

02. Yuck / Yuck - Nineties indie rock goodness is how I would describe this. They sound like a mix of all the great early nineties indie music without sounding overdone or uninspired. See: Dinosaur Jr., Elliott Smith and Yo Le Tango.I love it!

03. Kurt Vile / Smoke Ring for my Halo - Kurt Vile is local to Philly and a brilliant indie folk rocker. His 4th release, Smoke Ring for my Halo, is by far his best work and seems to be something he wrote to please no one but himself. I dig that.

Standout tracks - Jesus Fever, Puppet to the Man, On Tour and Ghost Town

04. Bayside / Killing Time - This album is catchy and melodic yet also has a punk vibe. It has a rougher edge, but is still undoubtedly Bayside. I definitely saw Bayside perform live the most this year (6+ times?). I still get super energized when I listen to Killing Time. This band really stepped it up this year.

Standout Tracks - Already Gone, It's Not A Bad Little War, Mona Lisa and The New Flesh

05. The Decemberists / The King is Dead - The Decemberists moved away from the prog rock sound of Hazards of Love and produced a mellow, country-folk album which I love. Some of my favorite songs of the summer came from this album.

06. Foo Fighters / Wasting Light - This album really impressed me. I guess I had forgotten how great the Foo Fighters were, but I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. This album seems to be back to basics and raw rather than experimental which is a reason I love it.

Standout Tracks - These Days, A Matter of Time, I Should Have Known and Walk

07. Blind Pilot / We Are the Tide - This band is great and while I was skeptical about their 2nd release, it was so, so good. If there is any show I regret missing this year, it is seeing Blind Pilot live.We Are the Tide is lovely and delicate with a couple of upbeat tracks mixed in.

Standout Tracks - Half Moon, Always, Keep You Right, We Are the Tide, I Know and New York

08. Ryan Adams / Ashes & Fire - This album is beautiful and so thought-provoking. It's mellow and quiet, yet so moving. I was very impressed by this. It also proves that although happily married, he can still write amazing music.

09. Daybreak / Saves the Day - I did not love this album until I saw it live, now it is one of my favorites because it is so raw and familiar to STD's previous albums. Chris Conley continues to write music that he is passionate about without worrying about others opinions.

10. I Am the Avalanche / Avalanche United - This is a long awaited album from IATA and it did not disappoint! This was a truly excellent year for pop-punk.

DIY: Anthropologie Knock-Off Necklace

This DIY is all over Pinterest, so I needed to try it!

My version is on the left, on the right is the Antrohpologie necklace that inspired this DIY. I used more neutral beads than the original.

Supplies: A hammer, pliers, beads, thin wire and thick wire.

First you cut a piece of the thick wire to the length that you want your pendant and find a hard surface to hammer it flat. I used sharp sewing scissors to put the holes in each end of flattened wire.

Then take the thin wire and begin wrapping it around the flat piece of wire.

String the beads onto the wire then wrap the beads around the flat piece of wire. Position the beads on the front of the wire.

When you're finished adding the beads, use gold jump rings to attached the chain.

And the completed necklace!

It turned out much better than I had expected and plan to try it with different types of beads. I need to figure out the best type of thick wire to buy though because the gold pealed off f the wire I used when I hammered it, so it was silver. I liked the mixed metals look with the neutral beads, but also like the bright gold of the Anthro necklace.

Yes! It is finally Friday. The holiday season is stressful! Work is busy, life outside of work is busier and all I want to do is paint my nails a red & sparkly color, but I have not had time. Perhaps this weekend! How was your week?

DIY: Bird Nest Necklace.

Now that the stress of prepping for the Punk Rock Flea Market has passed, I can get back to creating new necklace designs and trying out DIY projects. This Bird Nest Necklace is inspired by this and this. It's easy & fun to make and the perfect necklace for springtime (I really wanted to wear this today and show you my outfit, but it didn't match any of my winter wardrobe!), which is a few months off, but this could still be a very cute gift.

Supplies: Wire, chain and small beads. I prefer the gold, but you could also try it out in silver.

First, create a cluster of the three beads and wrap the wire so that they are secure in the position you would like them in. Then continue to wrap the wire around the beads creating a circle (the nest). As you are creating the circle, also weave the wire in between to fill in the gaps and create a more realistic looking nest.

When you are satisfied with the look of your nest, cut the wire but leave enough to create a loop. String a chain through the loop and you're done!

I love this DIY because it is so easy, but looks expensive. It's also easy to personalize - you can use whatever color beads that you'd like. I'm going to try making a larger nest pendant for a long chain, this one is smaller and I put it on a short chain. I have a few people in mind who this would make a great gift for!

Gift ideas for guys.

While I do not support the radio stations switching to Christmas music super early, I do support getting a head start on holiday shopping (because, really, who wants to be waiting in line at the mall the week before Christmas).

As I was beginning to think about what to get people on my list, I realized that I'm not very good at shopping for guys. I can shop for ladies with no problem at all, but getting a guy a unique gift that a guy will use is a bit harder. So after a bit of thought and some helpful advice on Twitter I came up with these ideas.

Side note: Fab.com has a brilliant pop-up shop that includes the best design gifts for under $100. If you're not a member, sign up here! A few of the items below are from there.

1. A belt! This is a very simple idea and something guys always need. This one is made of cork and rather expensive, but I love the idea. I like getting gifts that will get used, but still have character.

2. Books. Unless you have some guys who read a lot in your life, this is a tricky one. But! I saw this DIY furniture book and thought it would be cool idea for a handy & creative guy. The great thing about books is that you can always find one to fit a persons interests.

3. A Morrissey candle. Obviously there is a very specific guy who would like this, but a manly candle is something different! I've heard that they sell bacon scented candle for the meat-lovers in your life.

4. Cuff links! This is the equivalent of a dude getting a girl nice earrings, in my opinion. Something that would mainly be worn on fancy occasions. There are so many awesome cuff links out there, these Steampunk ones for example! I actually want to start designing some from my shop.

5. A travel case. This one is cool because it's made from a recycled inner tube. Again, it's always great to get someone something that they probably need & will use often.

6. Music! Make a mix cd, get their favorite album on vinyl or pick up a CD they've been wanting. If you want to surprise a dude with new music and show him you have excellent taste, I recommend A Great Big Pile of Leaves new 7 inch, Boom!

7. A flash drive. Tech stuff can be expensive, but something like this isn't! Is the dude you're shopping for a big geeky? Get him one that's Star Wars themed.

8. Head phones. This is another idea that guys generally need or, if they don't lose their head phones all of the time (like a guy that I know), upgrade them to a better pair!

9. A Watch. Again, this could be compared to a dude getting a lady jewelry. It's an expensive purchase, but a great gift idea and something they probably would not buy for themselves.

10. A Wallet. Guys, from my experience, always seem to need a new wallet. Save them the trouble and get one for them!

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm thankful for so many things, one of them being good music. My boss mentioned this band to me last week and after listening, they are a must listen!

Milo Greene is a folk-rock group from California who have their first debut album coming out in the spring. They are gaining a lot of buzz from music bloggers and are currently they are touring with another great band, Grouplove. The more I hear, the more I love their sunny, upbeat pop songs and poetic lyrics. They have a mellow sound that is warm and inviting. Think a mix of Local Natives & Edward Sharpe and the Nuclear So & So's. Definitely a feel-good band. I'm very excited for their upcoming release.

DIY: Infinity Scarf

Hello! I'm spending some of the long weekend at my parents house, which means I get to play with my moms sewing machine! Tonight I tried out something very simple, an infinity scarf, with an old sheet and some lace detail.

Supplies: 2 feet of fabric (I used an old jersey knit sheet), 6 inches of lace, scissors, thread and a needle. You can sew this by hand, but a using a machine will give you better results (and be much faster to do).

Cut your fabric to the desired length and width you'd like your scarf to be. Then fold it in half and line up a piece of lace in between the ends. Sew those pieces together and ta-da! Your very on infinity scarf with very cute lace detail is complete!

And here I am modeling it with the limited about of clothing options I have in my childhood bedroom. Sorry for the unrealistic tank top in winter outfit and my collection of CDs from the 90's in the background.

I love this and I made it only with fabric scraps. I'm very excited to think about the scarves I could make with some planning and a trip to Jo-Ann Fabrics!

ALSO, while I was hardcore crafting today, I also made this key bracelet inspired by this one from Urban Outfitters. I might change the cording I used. Probably to something thicker and a lighter color. But, all I did was take an old skeleton key (that was already a bit bent), used pliers to bend it some more and then added leather cording with simple knots.

Burning a door in the back of my mind.

Upon fist listen a month or so ago, I didn't like Saves the Day's newest album, Daybreak. Mostly because it felt unfinished. Then I saw them play some of it live and it grew on me.

Last night I saw someone mention a documentary that came with the album, Finding Daybreak. After a quick Google search I found & watched it. Not only did it confirm my love for the album, but also the band. Specifically Chris Conley.

Saves the Day is a band that has had a strong influence on my life and a band that I will always be a fangirl for (similar to Brand New). I could completely relate to the lyrics. Through Being Cool (their second album) felt like the story of my high school life. They were also (and still are) a no frills band, passionate about the music, and not focused on becoming famous. That's what's so inspiring to me about Chris Conley. He is an amazing song writer and had the chance to be huge, like Fall Out Boy or Paramore status, but rather than selling out, kept writing music the way he wanted to. He stuck to the core values of emo, which is just honestly sharomg your emotions through music. And that's why Saves the Day is so relateable and still amazing after all of these years.

I love making mixes for people. I very carefully choose each song to convey a thought or feeling. Some don't appreciate it as much as others. Chris & I's anniversary is coming up, so I thought I'd share this. 

Before we started dating, Chris was in Philly for a show and stopped by my house after. We stayed up the entire night talking. I don't even remember what we talked about, just that the conversation was effortless. The next day he had to drive to New York for a show, so around dawn, before I headed to work, I made him a mix for the road. Late that night, after his show, he called me and told me he listened to the mix and said something like, "after listening to this, I'm pretty such you have the same feelings that I do."

I am so inspired by the autumn color palette. Yesterday on the way to work there were beautifully colored leaves, but this morning it seemed that all of them had fallen off the trees. The dead of winter is near.

Confessions of a working girl.

You knows those girl that just seem to have it together? Yep, I'm not one of them. If you ever thought I was one of those girls, I'm just good at pretending. And I'm not saying that I'm not together but actually am charmingly quirky and beautiful like Zooey Deschanel. Nope, not like that.

This morning I woke up late, threw my hair up in a messy bun (I look like Joey from Dawson's Creek), dug a slightly winkled top out of my drawer and threw on a pair of unwashed jeans. I forgot my phone at home, ate breakfast in my car and my socks definitely didn't match.

That type of morning isn't unusual.

My nights consist of a dinner of soup around 8 ish pm, a glass of wine and working on my Etsy shop. I blog before bed then go to sleep around midnight and dream of the weekend. I'm always counting down to the weekend. Two short, yet wonderful days of freedom.

I don't cook. I don't go to the gym (although I wish I did). I'm not secretly planning my dream wedding. I can't go out on weeknights without looking like a complete mess the next day. I'm just working hard and hoping that all of this one day pays off. Or my student loans get paid off.

Being a working girl is hard. Especially when you are also trying to launch your own business. And thus begins my search for an intern. Just kidding. But seriously, is anyone interested? I'll pay you in mix tapes and strong coffee.

Some days I need a Coach Taylor Pep Talk. Today is one of those days.

Can anyone else relate? What gets you through a rough week?

Hello! Today was nuts. So! This weekend Meghan and I went shopping a bit in Boston because there are some great consignment shops near her apartment. 

Remember my search for a holiday dress? Well, I found one! A retro, red, perfect dress. I was unsure right after I tried it on though, so put it back on the rack, only to change my mind 10 minutes later. And it was gone. Another girl picked it up and then continued to carry it around the store for 30 minutes while Meghan and I watched and tried on shoes we couldn't afford. Now I am in search of a better one. Also, I feel like a creep for somewhat stalking a girl, but it was for a very cute dress. So it goes.

On meeting bloggers.

This weekend I took an impromtu trip to Boston to see a friend who moved there recently, but also had a chance to meet up with some bloggers who I've known since I started blogging.

Side note: Buses with Internet are a brilliant invention. I've gotten so much work done this weekend, thanks to Bolt Bus.

Ashley (@writetoreach) and I have been following eachothers blogs and chatting via comments and Twitter since 2008 ish. Finally she made it to the East Coast and we were able to meet IRL (in real life). I also met Nicole & Ashley D, which was also exciting.

When spent a fun girls night in sipping fancy drinks and making fun of Dawson's Creek. It was like we had all been friends for years.

Meeting people I knew through blogging has never seemed creepy to me, even though I know it weirds some people out (including some of my IRL friends). I've never had a bad experience though. By reading someones blog for several years, or even just following them on Twitter, you get to know the person really well.

So yes! Meeting up with bloggers is fun! So is Boston! I have a playlist as well as a funny shopping story for you tomorrow.

I can't imagine that we won't miss this.

First off, happy Veterans Day to all of the men and women who have served our country. I am truly grateful. Second, happy Friday! This weekend I am going on a short adventure to Boston to see my friend Meghan and also meet up with some bloggers. I'm excited to take a short break from my usual weekend routine. Books for geeky girls.

Geek Girls Unite by Leslie Simon

As a self proclaimed fan-girl, as soon as I first heard about this book, I knew it would be one that I would completely relate to. On the second page Leslie writes, "I have a long standing date with Gilmore Girls every weekday at 5 p.m. on ABC Family. Most of my Facebook status updates are Liz Lemon quotes from 30 Rock. One of my goals in life is to collect Bright Eye's entire discography." Wait, are you in my head?! Have you been watching me? Nope, Leslie Simon is just another geek girl like myself. And it's great to know that there are indeed other geeky girls out there.

When I first started blogging I met Jessica (who is quoted in this book!) and we became friends because of our fan-girlness. It's surprisingly hard to meet girl friends who love to discuss books, good TV shows, movies or music, so I am very grateful for the ones I have.

This book provides a fun and relateable look into the lives of geek girls and is a must read for any girl who feels like they are a bit of an outcast.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling writes like a younger version of Tina Fey. After reading her book, I am positive that Mindy and I would be good friends. She is hilarious and most definitely a geek girl. I love reading about someone who grew up as a nerdy girl in high school yet still had confidence to pursue her dream. Because really, high school doesn't matter, who cares what the "popular kids" had to say.

Also, as a fan of The Office, it was cool to read about what it was like behind the scenes.

This book is really funny and super easy to relate to. I laugh out loud too many times to count.

I may have tweeted over the weekend that I was annoyed about the Chrsitmas music playing in A.C. Moore before Thanksgiving. Then I got my first inivitation to a Holiday part and had a slight change of heart.

I need to find a Holiday party dress.

This sounds absurd and out of character for me, but this year I don't want to rush to put together a festive outit last minute. With one dress I will be prepared for the Holiday season.

Here is my inspiration.

I especially love the look of long sleeved dresses (which I said in my winter fashion inspiration post). And lace! And the color red! With tights! There are many exciting things about putting together a festive outfit. Find links to the dresses here.

Yesterday I posted some winter fashion inspiration without any shoes. That was because they deserve their own post, of course.

Here are some shoes & boots I really love for the upcoming season.

1. Vintage Military Boots. I love this style of boots. Sleek with a small button detail. I especially love the olive green color.
2. Wedge Booties from Target. I've seen so many cute outfits with boots like this! Perfect with skinny jeans or a dress with tights.
3. Over the Knee Boot. I'm on the look out for a pair of vintage boots like this. I love the tie detail on the top of the food.
4. Gratitude Tall Boot from Free People.These are perfect and I love the way they are styled with the red socks over tights.
5. Military Lace Up Boots. I think I mentioned boots like this last fall. Yep, I still want a pair.
6. Loxley Mary Jane Wedges. Can you picture these with tights & a festive Christmas dress? Holiday perfection.

I love learning (yep, nerd alert), therefore, I love a good documentary. Last night I watched Bill Cunningham New York on Netflix Instant Watch. It's about the simple living, fashion loving New York Times photographer who takes pictures of what people are wearing for his Sunday photo columns "On the Street" and "Evening Hours."

I was inspired by so many things about him. He appreciates uniqueness and average-sized women, doesn't care for celebrities and has a pure passion for his job, his life and his art. Can you imagine loving what you do everyday for your job? Right now I cannot.

Both that and the quickly dropping temperatures prompted me to put together my winter fashion inspiration. I am already dreading the cold weather and am thinking about all of the cute ways I can stay warm. Something about New York makes me think winter. And if you are walking the streets in that city, having fashion sense is a must, even if it's below zero.

So, here it is. The things I love for this winter.

Warm sweaters & winter accersories are a must. I need an infinity scarf. I might attempt to DIY it, but I love this knit red one. I also am in need of a winter coat. I would be oh, so happy if I found an affordable mustard yellow one. Also a must have for me this winter are leg warmers! So cute peeking out the top of leather boots. Tights are neccsary as well, of course. I want to try out a long skirt. I really like the look of skirts that hit the mid-calf. Very vintage. Another look I love is lon-sleeve dresses. With tights & boots? So cute and warm.

Today while walking through the aisles of the the food store I started reading the labels of food I would normally add to my cart, looking at all of the unnatural ingredients. I started thinkig about how disgusting eggs are. If I don't eat chicken, whywould I eat unhatched eggs? Why have I been!? Completely grossed out by my diet, I left with only fruits, vegetables and soy milk.

Over the weekend I watched the documentary, Forks Over Knives, on Netflix Instant Watch. This is certainly not the first documentary I've seen about cutting out meat, but for some reason, it really made me think. Less about what they were proving (because I already know that plant-based diets are healthier) but more about how profound a change in diet can be. Simply replacing meat and processed foods with veggies, fruits and grains can increase your energy and prevent disease.

Many times the argument for eating meat is that it's the only way to get protein. This just isn't true, yet so many people adamantly believe it is.

I've been vegetarian for almost six years. Chris has been vegan for 10. In our year of dating I never once thought about going vegan. I didn't mind eating vegan foods, but never thought of changing my diet. Recently I've felt tired all the time and ignored healthy eating due to stress. I need to change that, and am thinking that trying a vegan diet will help.

So what's stopping me? Honestly, although this may sound ridiculous, the hassle. It's inconvenient. I don't like calling attention to myself and having to explain why I don't eat certain things. I also don;t like cooking. Or grocery shopping. So perhaps I will try a part-time vegan diet for now. Or just be more concious about what I eat and try to include more fresh fruits and veggies into my meals.

DIY: Terrarium

Terrarium's are more complicated than one may think. Gardening skills are good to have. And small hands. First some inspiration, then I will tell you about my experience.

Those are terrariums I was inspired by. Now, here is how I made mine.

Supplies: Glass jar, sand, rocks, dirt & moss.

Fill the bottom of the jar with rocks, then a layer of sand. Add dirt and moss. Getting the moss the way you want it is hard with smaller jars and can get a bit frustrating.

Easy, but a bit dull. I only had one type of moss, so there wasn't too much color or texture.

It looks good, but it needs something else. Either figurines or different types of moss. Some of the terrariums I was inspired by had ferns and other indoor plants in them.

It was an interesting first attempt, but I am going to re-do this and get back to you. If you have any tips, please sent them to me!

Despite the snow, I did so many fun fall activities this weekend! One of them being pumpkin carving, which is fully documented below.

And one of the best parts...pumpkin seeds! Lightly buttered and seasoned with garlic salt. 

We also made freshly juiced apple cider. Anyone else into the juicing trend? I love it. You can get so many servings of veggies in one glass.

- My weekend goal is to successfully make a terrarium. My co-worker, Roman, found these (pictured above) glass jars at a flea market and my roommate, Andrea, has some decorative tequila bottles. I want to make terrariums for everyone & of course will let you know how it goes!

- Do you read Mindy Kaling's blog? It's great. Add it to your reader. This week she posted something she bought that she loved: House of Harlow earrings! I love House of Harlow. I have this key necklace and am patiently waiting for a necklace that a well-connected friend showed me that will be released with the Spring collection (I believe).

ALSO, on the topic of Mindy Kaling, can we just start a massive book club for Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, which will be released on Tuesday. I will begin reading as soon as I get it, anyone else?

Florence + the Machine's new album, Ceremonials, is streaming here! It's very good. I especially love the song Never Let Me Go.

Also, recommended by Lorna, I've been listening to a lot of Jessica Lea Mayfield, a very talented indie folk singer. Her most recent release is called Tell Me which is full of analytical love songs. A must listen. Especially Our Hearts are Wrong, Blue Skies Again and Trouble.

Goals. It's easy to get trapped in a 9-5 routine, and the only thing that has been preventing me from doing so is the list of goals I have set. Here it is...

Couch to 5K. Yes, I am learning to be a runner. So far, not as successfully as I'd like. Anyone have tips for motivation?
Build my Etsy shop and participate in more craft fairs. I've been crafting just about every day and the Punk Rock Flea Market is fast approaching.
#NaNoWriMo or National Novel Writing Month. Yep, I'm going to try it again. This time with a twist. I don't really want to write a novel, I do love writing short stories though and need to write more in general. I am going to attempt to write at least four short stories in the month of November! Let me know if you are also participating in #NaNoWriMo.
Read. I haven't been reading nearly as much as I used to. Must pick that habit back up. Have you read any good books lately?

DIY: Wood Post Earrings

I had a very crafty weekend. Thanks to Chris, my first craft show was a success! We made money, supported a good cause and met some very nice crafters. Now we are planning for the next one, the Punk Rock Flea Market in Philly on December 11th. Also, I added some new things to the shop and am now shipping internationally!

Sunday was a beautiful fall day, so after the craft show we went on a short adventure through to woods behind his parents house to find a small oak tree to make earrings.They were very easy (with the proper tools and the help of a dude) and turned out very cute.

1. Find a small Cedar tree or branch. Cedar because their rings are very tight and create a very pretty detail for small earrings.

2. Cut off any excess branches. The technical term would be pruning.

3. Use a wire brush to get off any excess bark. Side note: How awesome are these photos? They are all taken with the iPhone 4S. I'm super impressed by the quality.

4. Use a table saw to cut 1/2 inch pieces. If you're interested in the details of this, such as how not to cut your finger off, ask Chris, because I have not a clue.

5. Place the pieces in the oven on a low temperature (250 degrees) for abotu 15 minutes to dry them out.

6.Sand them until they are smooth using oval motions to avoid getting lines through the middle.

7. Spray two coats of a lacquer hi-gloss spray give them a shine (remember to open a window if you are doing this inside!). You could also use clear nail polish.

8. Glue earring posts on the back after the top coat has dried.

And you're done! Easy, right? Except for the cutting portion. If you're not into the idea of DIYing, I have some of these up on my Etsy shop for the low, low price of $5! If you do try this out, let me know how it goes!

DIY: Fabric Covered Button Earrings

I made a pair of fabric covered button earrings for my shop several months ago and posted a picture on my Facebook page, but I wanted to show you how EASY they were to make. If you have fabric you love and the desire to do-it-youself, please do and send me a picture of the results!

All you need is a cover button kit ($2.99), fabric, earring backs, pliers and glue.

Cut a round piece of fabric slightly larger than the button size then follow the simple instructions on the back of the cover button kit package.

After the buttons are covered, remove the metal loop on the back with pliers and glue on the earring back.

And, you're done! So, so easy.

Side note: I will have a table at my very first craft show on Sunday! While I was feeling good about successfully handmaking business cards, I also made packaging and a lot of new pieces (that I will list on Etsy as soon as I have a free moment). DIY: Business Cards

Since the launch of my Etsy shop several months ago I had been trying to figure out what type of business cards to invest in. When starting a business from a hobby, it's important to keep costs low, especially when you're only focusing on it part time. My options were generic business cards for free via Vista Print, expensive custom printed cards designed in Photoshop or handmade.

Thus began project DIY business cards. After several failed attempts, I came up with these.

Pretty, unique and simple with a touch of vintage. Exactly how I want people to view my shop.

The costs for more than 100 of these:

100+ perfectly pre-cut scraps of paper from A.C. Moore: $2.99
Scrap ribbon from my mom's basement: Free
Custom stamp: $4.75
Black Ink Pad: $5.95
Time Spent: 3-4 Hours

Total spent: $13.69. So, about 13 cents per card. I'm very pleased.

This summer I was making a lot of nautical jewelry for my shop. Recently, thanks to some old skeleton keys I found, vintage keys are my new inspiration. The first piece I made is the long necklace above. Let me know what you think! Also, I'd be interested to know, what is inspiring you right now?

- First! For a good Friday read I suggest Geek Girls Unite by Leslie Simon which provides a hilarious look at the modern geeky girl. Get it here.

- What's obvious to you might be amazing to other s. Very true.

- Vegan pumpkin spice doughnuts. These are on my list of things to attempt to bake.

- Fabric covered suitcase DIY. I see old, ugly suitcases like the one used in this all the time, covering them with fabric is such a good idea. A cute way to store things. Another great DIY on the same blog shows you how to make a ruched lace scarf. Super cute and on my to-do list.

- I need to cut down on the amount of coffee I drink and get into tea. This robot tea infuser would probably help the cause.

DIY Inspiration.

Anyone else on Pinterest? I love it as a place to store ideas and organize inspiration. Tonight I was frustrated because there were a lot of projects I wanted to work on, but I am waiting on some of the supplies I need for them.

Here is somewhat of a to-do list.

My cousin, Cristina, sent me a picture of a zipper bracelet and suggest I make one. I have the zipper but want to add a charm to the end to make it cuter. Stay tuned for a post on this in the next week or so.

Clay! I've seen a lot of cute necklaces and earrings made with polymer clay. I want to get into making my own beads.

DIYing a terrarium has been on my list for a while. I'm still in search of the perfect container. I love this teapot. Perhaps this will be a weekend project. Again, I will indeed document and share it here.

This is more of a future idea for a future apartment. How cute is this light cover? Super. And so easy to make.

Sewing is on my list to get better at. My mom is in the process of fixing her old sewing machine for me (thanks, mom!!! xo) and the first thing I will do is make some adorable circle scarves from old tee shirts and vintage fabrics.

Speaking of sewing. I did occupy my restless self tonight by replacing the buttons on that mustard yellow cardigan that I added elbow patches too.

Two somewhat related things...

1. Broken Social Scene is on an indefinite hiatus. I hope this means a new solo album from Kevin Drew.
2. Feist's new album, Metals, is excellent.

Metals is raw, much more unpolished and less mainstream than The Reminder. It also has much more of a folk influence, similar to Let It Die. It's unique and adventurous, yet flows effortlessly. Feist is an amazing songwriter and this album proves that she also has a powerful voice.

Recommended Tracks: The Bad In Each, How Come You Never Go There, Bittersweet Melodies and Get It Wrong, Get It Right.

Almost a year ago when I wrote about how to suppress fangirl tendencies while hanging around bands that you love. Last night I watched a band I think I will always be a fangirl for (Saves The Day) with my pop-punk idol (Vinnie Caruana...see: lead singer of The Movielife). As most of you know, I'm a huge geek about that scene and feel comfortable admitting it on the Internet, but definitely had to keep my cool while backstage.

Anyway, I Am the Avalanche, an opener last night, is back to touring and have a new album coming out soon. It's streaming here. So good. Some key tracks are Holy Fuck, Brooklyn Dodgers, Amsterdam and This One's on Me. Also, Anthony Raneri from Bayside is featured on The Gravedigger's Argument.Seriously, such a good album.

Saves the Day performed next. Gah! They are still so good. Even after all these years. They played some old songs and some new songs. Although I didn't like Daybreak at first, listening to some of the songs live made me like the album much more. They ended their set with At Your Funeral which always brings me back to high school. I will forever be a fangirl for these dudes.

The headliner was Bayside. They put on a good show, per usual. I can't believe how many times I've seen them play this year. Their newest album, Killing Time is very good.

Last night was the first day of the tour, definitely worth going to if they are playing in a city near you! Transit, another really great pop-punk band, opened too, but I got to the show a too bit late to see them.

DIY: Gold Glitter Earrings

Have you seen earrings that look like these?

I've seen similar pairs all over the place. I love gold and the subtle glitter detail, but I don't love the $100+ price tag. So, I decided to DIY them, of course.

Supplies:
- Gold Glitter Glue
- Gold buttons with a raised edge
- Earring backs
- Super glue

Fill the center of the button with gold glitter glue.

Wait for it to dry then use the super glue the earring backs on.

Let that dry and then you're done! Super easy, right?

I put a few pairs up on my Etsy shop for $5 if you don't want to make them yourself, but if you do try this out, send me pictures!

Our flight back to Philly was slightly delayed so I am blogging from the Denver airport! Colorado is beautiful and I had such a fun trip. Here is a recap in instagram images (you might have seen some of these on Twitter).

We ate amazing vegan food. Seriously. I had no idea that vegan french toast could be so delicious. Above is an image of a deconstructed vegetarian pot pie which was also quite tasty.

Explored Denver and visited the art museum.

Saw the beautiful scenery and hiked in Rocky Mountain National Park. The views there are breathtaking and what is most awesome about it is that such a scenic area is so close to a really great city. We listened to a ton of Neko Case, Good Old War and the Heatless Bastards while driving through the mountains.

Went thrifting and got to know the Denver's culture. Stay tuned for a huge shop update!

Saw Circa Survive and Maps and Atlases at a small venue in Boulder.

We also spent time with really great friends and met some new ones (including a blogger, Ashley)!

I'm super bummed to be headed back to Philadelphia & my typical routine. How are you doing?

DIY: Elbow Patches.

I did so much crafting this weekend. First I spent some time making earrings for my Etsy shop (which you can get here)!

Then I attempted to sew. My grandmother was a seamstress who owned her own children's clothing store and my mom is pretty good at sewing as well, so I am convinced that it's in my genes. My first try was not excellent, but I think it's something I could become better at - which opens up a whole new world of DIY. I will keep you updated on my progress.

Anyway, my first project was elbow patches for my favorite mustard yellow sweater that somehow got a hole in the sleeve.

Here was my inspiration -

All you need is a plain cardigan (or any type of sweater), fabric (I cut up another old sweater of mine), thread that matches your fabric color (or a contrasting color if you so choose), a needle, some pins and beginner sewing skills.

First, make an oval pattern and pin it to your fabric. Cut two ovals out and then place and pin them to your sweaters sleeve in the desired location. And sew! I used dark brown thread that matched the fabric color and a hemming stitch (I think). It took about an hour or so to do.

I conquered my fear of sewing, added a new trend to my wardrobe and saved a sweater!

I'm doing fine, just fine.

Happy first day of fall! I am wearing my favorite fall colors, but not sipping pumpkin flavored coffee. I'm already sick of it ( I know, blasphemy!).

- R.E.M. officially broke up this week! The only song I really love by them is Losing My Religion. Any hardcore fans out there?

- Most of the post that I starred in my Google reader this week have been fall fashion inspiration. Forrest green, gold & leopard print. Perfect yellow color combination s. Stripes, red & leather coats. Amazing fall accessories.

I love going on thrifting trips. I love scouring the racks for treasures that others might not find. I also love the completely affordable prices. So I present to you, my tips and tricks to a successful thrift shopping trip.

Have a list. Whether it is in your head or written down, know what you are looking for. Going into a massive Goodwill with an idea of what you need or want will be less overwhelming.

Make a plan. Working a typical 9-6 job doesn't leave time during the week to shop, so I have usually make a day of it on a Saturday or Sunday. I like to find a few stores in the same area and stop at them all. Know what you are looking for because consignment shops have a much different selection than thrift stores do.

Don't buy it unless you love it! This is important. With the low prices and knowing that you might never be able to find that same item again, it's easy to get carried away. As with buying anything, make sure it is something you will use. When I was looking this weekend, a lot of things weren't fitting me right. I decided to pass rather then added more things I don't wear to my very full closet.

Look through everything! You all know that I love shoes and handbags, so I tend to focus on those things which causes me to miss some other great things. Sometimes you can find some great fabric to re-use in the linens section of the store.

Don't be disappointed if you don't find anything. With thirfting trips its usually hit or miss. But when you do find something that you really love, it kind of feels like this...

Anyway, like I said, this past weekend when I went, I didn't find much. Just a couple of things that I used to make necklaces for my shop. Now, I want to send you to my roommates blog. She picked up some very cute things this weekend and shared them in this post.

It was a busy weekend leading into a busy Monday, so I am just getting around to posting a mix. This weekend I went to two Motion City Soundtrack shows. Both nights were really awesome. I especially loved the first night,where they played their first two albums and A Great Big Pile of Leaves opened. But thesecond night was fun two, and dreamboat Jarrod Gorbel played beforeMCS came on, so I was very pleased.

I figured since I spent most of my weekend listening to MCS, I would post my top 5 favorite songs by the band (this was hard to do...).

It feels like fall in Philly! This morning was a very chilly 52 degrees and I was happy to put on some warm socks and my favorite boots. TONIGHT I am going to see MCS and AGBPOL (AND Jessica and Adam)! More on that next week, as well as a post about a thrifting adventure and a sweater DIY.

I don't love Missoni and was not as excited as the rest of the fashionistas on the Internet about the new Missoni for Target collection that hit stores today. The overabundance of multicolor zigzag patterned everything hurt my head. THEN someone posted a picture of these on Twitter.

Black, beige and brown suede with the perfect amount of chevron on the toe? AND LOOK AT THAT HEEL! It's beautiful. I love these. So rather than rushing to a store (I was at work, so I didn't have much choice in the matter) I patiently waited for Target's website to stop crashing and bought these shoes. And now I will count down the days until I receive them in the mail.

I really need a new hobby. Or to delete my Twitter. OR freeze my credit cards. Is there a support group for girls addicted to online shopping? There should be. I didn't tell anyone because I JUST cleaned out my closet and need to be paying student loans, but Rue La La tempted me to buy a Matt & Nat bag last week. I figured everyone would assume that my pretty new handbag came from the handbag fairy. Seriously though, I need to block emails for flash sales.

Anyone else have an online shopping addiction? TIPS?!

My sweater's on backwards and inside out.

This morning as I was rushing to go to work I found a MASSIVE hole on the elbow of my favorite mustard yellow sweater. I think this means I need to DIY elbow patches which I am seeing everywhere (stay tuned for a post!). It also means that I really need to refresh my closet with some new cardigans. And lets be honest, pumpkin spice lattes aren't the best part about fall, sweaters are!

Here is some inspiration. All of these are out of my price range, but I grabbed pictures from the internet of trendy sweaters I would like to own and am going to search for affordable look-a-likes. Slouchy, grandpa inspired sweaters are in! And look at this perfect fall color palette! Love the earth tones.

Has anyone bought new fall sweaters yet? Do share! My roommate got a cute beige and coral one that she plans to pair with a millitary style jacket. Love it.

- Zara, a store that has never had an online shop, now does! This is exciting because there was a dress I desperately wanted last winter but was not available at any stores near me. Right now I am loving this blouse, unfortunately, I own way too many polka dot tops.

- Lorna hosted our usual Thursday night Project Runway gathering last night and we made these Oreo Stuffed Chocolate Cookies. Super delicious.

- "I Wanna Be Tavi Gevinson" Have you ever read Thought Catalog? I think the writers are pulling ideas straight from my head because completely relate to and agree with most things they say. This post I really loved because earlier this week I was reading Tavi's new site and thinking this very same thing!

- Thanks to Facebook for reminding me that this time last year I was on my way to Chicago with two of my best friends. It was also the weekend before starting my last term of college. So much has changed! And so many more things will be changing soon!
